Ellie Bruce, Vice President Sales and Oil
Heritage - Crystal Clean, LLC
 

Ellie Bruce started her career in the used oil industry in 1988 when she joined Breslube Industries in Ontario, Canada. At Breslube, Ellie supported the growth of the United States used oil collection program. When new owner Safety-Kleen built their second re-refinery in East Chicago, Indiana, Ellie was made responsible for overall planning and financial reporting. She continued with Safety-Kleen for 12 years and held a variety of positions, including Controller of Safety-Kleen Canada Inc., where she was responsible for all of the lines of business across the Canadian branches.

Ellie joined Heritage-Crystal Clean (HCC) in 2006, and as the Chief Accounting Officer and Human Resources Manager, implemented the systems needed to help the company go public. When HCC entered the used oil re-refining business, Ellie was promoted to Vice President of Oil with full oversight of the Oil Business including collection, third party supply, and finished product sales. In 2012 Ellie took on additional responsibilities for HCC’s branch network as Vice President of Sales.

Ellie has been an active member of NORA since 2011. She has served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Re-refining Council. In June 2014, Ellie was selected as Co-Chair of NORA’s Asphalt Flux Task Force. Her employer, HCC, is a strong NORA supporter, with a history of active participation in the organization.

 

 
Jeff Cagle, Vice President of Used Oil Operations
Safety-Kleen
 

Jeff Cagle has over 25 years of experience in financial and operational leadership roles. Having joined Safety-Kleen in 2007, Jeff has held positions in finance, strategic pricing and currently as Vice President of Used Oil Operations. In that role he is responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of Safety-Kleen’s used oil business which includes collecting, transporting and processing over 200 million gallons of used oil annually, and annual sales of over 40 million gallons of Recycled Fuel Oil. Mr. Cagle has a BSBA and MBA in Finance, and holds the designations of Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified in Financial Management (CFM).

Over the last 2 years as member of the NORA Board of Directors I have developed a deep appreciation for the challenges facing our growing organization, and the impact that our organization must have on a dynamic industry. As the largest member of NORA, I am committed to Safety-Kleen’s active and constructive role in NORA’s efforts to forge an authoritative voice in our industry. The strength and diversity of our Organization becomes even more critical today as we move forward in a rapidly changing market, faced with the threat of increased regulatory restrictions and an evolving market.

 

 
Kai Dotiwala, President
Q Environmental, Inc.
 

Kai Dotiwala has had a long association with NORA since before 1994 at which time he served on NORA’S Governmental Affairs Committee as well as the Antifreeze working group. On both these committees Kai played an active role to protect and further the interest of Used Oil Recyclers.

In 1986 Kai along with his partner Bill Jones founded TexPenn, Inc. TexPenn was in the business of recycling Used Oil and related products. TexPenn developed a new burner fuel delivery system which allowed them to guarantee their, “Burner Fuel”. In doing so TexPenn was able to capture a substantial share of the burner fuel market from Corpus Christi to Paris, Texas. Tex Penn because of their commitment to quality also became a sole source provider of used oil to a major #6 oil blender.

Kai has been called on as an expert witness relating to used oil and products. Kai was also involved in assisting a couple of new comers to the Texas used oil market. One of those companies is today a major player in the national market and industry.

Combining a commitment to the environmental cause through waste reduction cutting edge technology and green products, Kai founded Q Environmental, Inc. in 2003, of which he is President. One of the environmental products which Q Environmental markets is considered BMP (Best Management Practice) by EPA.

Kai has worked for the Protocol Office of the City of Houston, where he was responsible for programming the visits of guests of the government of The United States of the rank of ambassador and above. He was also employed as Vice President for Administration at Bell Energy, Inc., and as a Crude Oil Trader for United Resources.

Kai sees major challenges and therefor opportunities for the Used oil and environmental industry. He sees the role of NORA to continue to vigilantly make sure that the rule makers understand the impact of the regulations they propose.

We can do that by inviting the rule makers to our meetings and visiting them in an unchallenged manner. While we should all work towards being good stewards of the environment we should do so with an understanding of the impact of these regulations on our industry, the community we operate in and our country.

 

 
Curtis Ellis, General Manager
International Treatment Chemicals, LLC
 

Business:

Curtis Ellis is an 18 year veteran in the Used Oil Industry. Curtis started his career in the Used Oil Business with American Enviro Services, Inc., Curtis was the lead Used Oil Processor for the Oil Treatment Plant and lead operator for the Industrial Wastewater facility in Newburgh, IN. He ended his tenure at AES as the Sales Manager over 5 locations in the Midwest region managing oil processing, emergency response, and waste water treatment.

In 2003 Curtis took a sales position with Midwest Custom Chemicals, Inc. (MCC) as the West Coast Account Manager (later portions of the east coast regions) selling chemicals into the NORA market for Demulsifiers and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals. MCC was acquired by Weatherford International and he became a regional account manager for Weatherford for 5 years.

In August of 2012, Curtis helped organize the incorporation of International Treatment Chemicals, LLC, based out of Evansville, IN, taking a lead role as the General Manager and Managing Member. ITC has grown from a Midwestern start-up company into an International Chemical Company selling products nationally and internationally.

Juan Fritschy, CEO
Avista Oil USA and Universal Environmental Services
 

Mr. Juan Fritschy joined the Mustad group in 2002. Juan held CEO positions in two engineering companies of the Mustad group: Tecasa out of Spain and Core Link out of Sweden; and became the CEO of Avista Oil USA –the flagship of the Avista group in North America- in mid 2011.

Before working for the Mustad group, Mr. Fritschy was a project engineer for Ericsson Company and was responsible for projects in many countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Italy, Canada, USA and several cities in China. He started his career in his native Argentina as a process engineer for the biggest seamless steel tube manufacturer in the world (Tenaris Group).

Mr. Fritschy graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with an electrical engineering degree, has a master degree in Biomedical engineering from the Biomedical Institute of Buenos Aires and a master degree in Metallurgy from the University of Buenos Aires. He has a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of London and he took M.B.A. courses at the London Business School.

 

 
Wayne Geisert, Director of Sustainable Development
Plummer's Environmental Services Inc.
 

Wayne Geisert has over 15 years of experience in the used oil industry. He started his career analyzing the multitude of treatment techniques for used oils/emulsion and wastewater treatment and then moved on to leadership and regulatory compliance roles. He has had responsibility as a Plant Manager at a large WWT plant in Detroit where he established a pre-approval treatment protocol for used oils and wastewaters. Using his knowledge and working experience, he also established clean-up/regulatory protocols with the goal of achieving environmental compliance in a cost effective manner. He also has worked closely with State and Federal regulators in drafting State adopted templates and procedures. Additionally, his experience in the industry as well as the varied employment opportunities have allowed him to cultivate a network of partnerships with a variety of chemical suppliers, industry vendors and regulators.

In his current role as Director of Sustainable Development at Plummer’s Environmental Services, he oversee the total waste and oil operations as well as new business growth programs. He is turning around the operational efficiencies of the treatment and recycling programs and instituting relationships with nationwide businesses. He also has reinvigorated the membership participation of the company within NORA.

He has been involved with NORA for over 7 years and has attended various conferences to gain an industry richness of knowledge and experience from the experts in the business. Most recently, Wayne has been Vice-Chair of the Waste Water working group and has participated on numerous phone calls.

Wayne Geisert earned his degree from the University of Michigan and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for Air and Waste Management Association. He is an active family man married with two kids. He serve as his son’s flag football coach, hockey team manager and is the CubMaster for the cub scout troop.

Wayne would be an ideal candidate to join the NORA Board of Directors as he can provide a fresh perspective on the industry trends and used oil business from the point of view of a smaller company member with a different business background. His robust work experience will bring a unique opinion to NORA and serving would allow him to contribute to a great organization. It would be a privilege to be part of the NORA Board of Directors to help shape the future services and events that NORA brings to the industry.

 

 
Adam Gray, President
Environmental Energy Inc.
 

There is a thin margin line between thriving and just surviving in an industry that in recent years has seen dramatic price fluctuation and consistent supply disruption from outside commodities. Having spent fifteen years through high school and college working for a Kansas Chevron Jobber and Bulk Fuel Distributor Adam Gray was positioned with both hands on experience from a front line truck driver perspective as well as back office strategic growth and operational margin.

With that experience and the understanding of the petroleum industry Adam Gray decided to go out on his own at the age of 30 and start Environmental Energy Inc. (EEI) in the summer of 2009. After rapid growth in the used oil recycling field and a desire to expand customer service offerings to oily water processing and collection Environmental Energy, as a team, decided to branch out and create ECO Water Solutions, LLC (ECO) a Waste Water Treatment and Transportation company in the spring of 2012.

Since the inception of EEI and ECO the main focus has been establishing educated, respectful route drivers that have the personal and business skills to solicit, close and sustain strong recovery relationships throughout the Midwest. These core values have allowed both companies to grow organically and through strategic acquisitions to over a 3M gallon annual recovery company within five years.

Having operated a small to mid-sized recovery company Adam Gray understands and appreciates the challenges supply throughput disruption has on cash flow and storage capacity and if elected to the Board Adam would bring energy, optimism and a commitment to focus on exploratory ideas on new sustainable RFO outlets outside Re-Refineries and Asphalt burners.

 

 
Mills (Bubba) Heard, Energy Manager
Oldcastle, Inc.
 

Mills joined APAC (now Oldcastle Materials) in January of 2001 working with the APAC Fuelport Division.  From 2001-2007 Mills managed Recycled Fuel Oil procurement activity for all the APAC companies across the southeastern US and provided technical assistance for the use of Recycled Fuel Oil at close to 400 Hot Mix Asphalt plants.  During that time APAC’s RFO program grew from 4 million gallons used annually to 58 million at its peak.  Nearly every APAC plant was converted to RFO during this time.  The “APAC RFO System” also received a patent during this time. APAC/Oldcastle has been an active member of NORA since 1999. Mills has attended most meetings while using NORA as a resource to network and stay on top of the industry trends, changes, and regulations. Oldcastle was a contributor to the NORA Defense Fund and Mills has been a speaker at past meetings. Oldcastle’s membership in NORA has allowed for awareness and involvement in government affairs & industry advocacy, knowledge & education, public relations and more.

In 2007 Mill’s role expanded to Utility and Energy Specialist for the Oldcastle Materials Group Southwest Division working with the Mississippi, Memphis, Trotti & Thomson, Texas Bitulithic, Arkhola, McClinton Anchor, and Oklahoma Oldcastle companies. In this role Mills served as the primary resource to analyze and implement various cost savings with regard to electricity, natural gas, propane, RFO, diesel, and Bio-Fuel.  He has managed and led many efficiency projects in this role and led procurement efforts for Electricity, NG, RFO, and Bio-Fuel. In 2011 Mill’s role expanded to Energy Manager for Oldcastle, Inc working with all Oldcastle companies (Oldcastle Materials, Oldcastle Building Envelope, & Architectural Products Group)  in MS, LA, TX, TN, AR, & OK.  He continues in this role as Energy Manager today.  Mills has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Mississippi State University. 

 

 
Rich Kalin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Noble Oil Services, Inc.
 

Rich serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Noble Oil Services, Inc. in North Carolina for over 20 years.

He has served on the Board of Directors the past two years and has committed Noble Oil Services, Inc. to the support of the NORA organization for over 20 years. Through both financial and human resources, Rich and the Company have advocated with NORA membership on all matters that impact the industry on its mission and helping it meet its goals and objectives.

During his 21 year tenure at Noble Oil Services, Inc. he has been responsible for business strategies and leadership development that has enabled the Company to grow to a 21 state operation and an industry leader. Additionally, he has a strong working knowledge of all operational, re-refining, financial, regulatory, environmental, administrative, and technological matters that impact not only Noble Oil Services, Inc. but the entire industry.

 

 
Jeff Kritta, Director of Sales
ATEK Access Technologies, LLC
 

Jeff was born and raised in Minnesota.  He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business with a Finance concentration.  Jeff was hired right out of college by Apogee Enterprises to run the operations of a glass installation business (Harmon AutoGlass).  After two years in retail, he moved over to the auto glass distribution side of the business where he spent the next 20 years with PPG Industries.  During this time, Jeff held many different roles – Market Manager, National Account Manager, Business Development Director and Sales Director.  At the time he left the auto glass business he was Territory Director, managing 21 branches across the Midwest and central Canada.  During this period, he also served as a Board of Director and the Treasurer for the Minnesota Glass Association for seven years. 

Jeff joined ATEK Access Technologies in 2013.  He is now the Sales Director over the many product lines that ATEK AT manufacturers.  He is spending the majority of his time supporting the growth of TankScan.  TankScan is a wireless tank level monitoring solution which works in many applications including monitoring the level of fluid in waste oil, new lubricants, water, gasoline, diesel and some chemicals.  ATEK AT has been an active NORA member since 2013. 

Jeff lives just north of St. Paul with his wife, Angie and Great Dane, Tess.  He loves to play volleyball and basketball and ride his snowmobile when the weather allows. 
 

 
Kenneth D. Lefever, President
Lancaster Oil Company, d/b/a Environmental Recovery Corporation
 

Born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Ken Lefever is President of Environmental Recovery Corporation of PA and Environmental Recovery Corporation of MD. He graduated from Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania with a degree in accounting and business administration and a minor in computer science.

Ken has worked in various family-owned businesses for most of his career. He also has Fortune 500 experience. He was an Area Controller for Republic Industries, a $3 billion integrated waste hauling company in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. He handled mergers and acquisitions of the east region which he helped grow from $30 million to $130 million in 18 months. In his position as President of Wilton Armetale he led a successful turnaround of the company taking annual losses in excess of a million dollars to a profitable company in less than a year which resulted in the sale of the business in June of 2010. In his current role with ERC the company has grown 20% per year with a focus on sales and marketing and new technologies for the operations. He helped spearhead the installation of a new “state of the art” waste water treatment facility, which doubled capacity of the company. He is active in all aspects of the company including sales and marketing as well operations.

He has been involved in numerous trade organizations including the Non-Ferrous Founders Society which is an organization of foundries throughout the United States and Canada. He was a past board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of York, PA. He is an active member of the local Knights of Columbus. He has been coaching youth sports since graduating from college and currently coaches youth basketball and soccer.

 

 
Paul McDaniel, President
Accurate Energy
 

Paul McDaniel, President of Accurate Energy, realized long before the green revolution became fashionable, that our country’s natural resources were being underutilized as viable fuel sources. From 1985 to 1988, he worked with federal and state legislators to promote and encourage the use of renewable fuels which would enable efficient and clean energy streams while significantly reducing our dependence on foreign suppliers.

Meanwhile, he identified the components, proportions, and specifications various users would require if they replaced their usual fuel supply with a type of recycled oil. Convinced of its merits, he founded Accurate Energy in 1988 and since then has worked with a diverse client base in both the recycled oil and virgin oil markets.

Paul’s associations include Nora which he has been a member of for the past 8 years and is Currently Vice Chairman of the Recycled Oil Committee. Paul is also a member of the Pittsburgh Petroleum Association.

Paul graduated from LaSalle University and was introduced to the petroleum industry in the mid-70s through Hess Oil Company. He then worked for Apex Oil Company and became involved with Recycled oil blending. He managed supply in Dallas, Texas and became familiar with gasoline blending, ethanol blending, importation and production. Paul is familiar with multiple aspects of the Petroleum Industry and hopes this knowledge will benefit Nora.

 

 
Ned Murray, Vice President, Environmental Services
Universal Lubricants, LLC
 

Ned Murray has broad environmental industry experience overall, entering the industry in 1985. Initially working in the PCB oil de-chlorination and decontamination segment of the industry, following was broad management and executive experience in operations and sales in industrial cleaning, disposal operations and site remediation, fixed facility operations & logistics within RCRA,TSCA and Superfund regulatory frameworks. He has worked throughout North America and the Caribbean. Ned also has significant experience in development of various processes and platforms related to sales and operational improvements across the environmental industry. He joined Universal Lubricants in 2012 to manage business development/sales and was named Vice President, Environmental Services in 2013. Universal Lubricants is vertically integrated to collect used oil, re-refine base lubricants and distribute new blended lubricants, providing a true closed loop option for consumers of lubricant products. In addition, Universal provides a full suite of environmental services focused on commercial and industry clients.

Ned has been associated with the liquid recycling industry since the inception of his career and a member of NORA since 2012. Ned has worked in treatment and processing of liquids include PCB oil treatment/decontamination, water treatment, used oil processing and re-refining. Since joining Universal, he has developed an appreciation for the various market forces impacting the used oil industry overall.

Ned is based in Atlanta and maintains offices in Dallas and Wichita. He is married to Dedra (also enjoys NORA events), and has two children, Jake 18, and Jessica 23.

 

 
Alain Portelance, Director of Sales & Marketing
Newalta Corporation
 

Mr. Portelance joined Newalta in 2010 and is accountable for the development and implementation of sales and marketing strategy for Newalta’s Oil Recycling Services (“ORS”), including oversight of Newalta’s “Advanta ECO” brand of base oils and lubricants.

Prior to joining Newalta, Mr. Portelance had over 16 years of experience with Shell in numerous positions including brand manager for Pennzoil and Quaker State brands in Canada and most recently as marketing manager - Americas for Shell Bitumen.

Since joining Newalta, Mr. Portelance has been active member of NORA. Most recently serving as chair of the sub-committee on research for NORA, an association of responsible recyclers.

 

 
Gary Risse, Senior Engineer
Trihydro Corporation
 

From 2009 until the present, Gary Risse has been a Senior Engineer with Trihydro Corporation. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Georgia and has over 28 years of varied experience in the environmental field. His Background includes Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) closure and corrective actions, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Superfund site waste removal and decontamination actions, Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) driven cleanups, centralized water treatment, and bulk chemical transport container cleaning.

Mr. Risse has served in a variety of professional capacities throughout his career. He initially began as a staff engineer for a consulting firm where he performed environmental investigations and remedial actions at active and legacy industrial facilities across the US. He later moved into an industry position in the early 1990s a Wastewater Engineer and ultimately was General Manager of Operations for a multi-location centralized wastewater treatment company which was affiliated with a bulk chemical transport container cleaning business. From about 1996 until 2009, Mr. Risse was the Senior Remediation Engineer for Safety-Kleen and oversaw site remediation activities, emergency response actions for more than 50 RCRA facilities in the southeastern US and Puerto Rico.

Since starting with Trihydro in 2009, Mr. Risse served as his Company’s lead liaison with NORA. His expertise in wastewater, remediation, oil processing, and related industries has provided an excellent platform to assist NORA and its membership at large. He has presented numerous times during scheduled NORA events on topics such as Environmental Due Diligence, Odor Controls, and Health & Safety issues. In addition to working directly with NORA, his firm has assisted several NORA members with a variety of environmental matters; all while remaining cognizant of the need for his clients to maximize profitability.

 

 
Todd Sheets, Vice President
Par-Kan Company
 

With 20+ years of sales experience, Todd Sheets leads the sales and marketing efforts at Par-Kan. Par-Kan, with Todd’s leadership, has supported both the NORA organization and this industry. Par-Kan is a committed member, exhibitor, and conference sponsor. They are also committed to the manufacture of products and services that promote responsible recycling.

Todd has been an active member of NORA for 10 years. He has participated in NORA’s national and regional conferences, attending every year, from Hawaii to New Hampshire. Also, Todd has supported NORA by serving on the planning committee in 2009.

Todd’s experience, a degree from Northwestern University, and a very short stint with the Chicago Bears led to his successful career. First in athletic administration in his home community for 10 years, and then to sales at Par-Kan. Todd lives in Indiana where Par-Kan is located.

 

 
John Strickland, Manager of Supply
Vertex Energy Inc
 

John Strickland has over 26 years experience in management roles of developing companies in the recycling of used oils and the fuel blending business. John has led these companies through start up modes, survival and growth modes. John joined Vertex in late 2007 where he currently serves as the Manager of Supply for Vertex Energy.

John has developed used oil collection fleets, environment services (non-hazardous), Terminal business of #6-oil from water ports and help develop software for used oil collection fleets. John believes your employees are your main assets in a company.

John was the General Manager of Texpar Energy inc. from 1999 to 2003 and Special Project Manager for Texpar Energy, L.L.C. from 2004 to 2007.

From 1986 to 1999, John was the General Manager and Vice- President of Sellers Oil inc. John led the business development of the recycling of used oil and the fuel blending business from 150,000 gallons a month up to 3,000,000 gallons a month. Sellers Oil became one of the largest recycling and fuel marketers of used oil and #6-fuel oil in the southeast during this time.
