The United States Environmental Protection Agency believes that almost 300 million gallons of used oil is improperly disposed of each year. This is a huge problem because a small amount of used oil can contaminate a large quantity of fresh water. Much of the improper disposal is believed to be caused by do-it-yourself oil changers who may dump their used oil on the soil or down storm drains.
NORA recommends that anyone who generates used oil should have it properly recycled. It’s not hard to do – many automotive shops will take back your used oil for no charge.
