NORA Member Awarded Second Place in the 2014 Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge

Drew Fatzinger, Oil Operations Manager at NORA Member Eldredge Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and long-time friend Steve Stein earned second place in the chicken competition at the Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge on Saturday, August 9th at Citizens Bank Park.

Fatzinger’s passion for food and cooking earned him acceptance to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY after high school, but he joined the Navy instead and started perfecting his craft as a nightshift chef.  His zeal for food has spread to family and friends alike, and he enjoys the opportunity to share that passion.  In fact, he now brings some forty family members and friends to the Barbecue Challenge, including his daughter who is a student at the Culinary Institute of America in California.

This August marks the fifth year that Stein and Fatzinger competed in the Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge.  Stein was the first to enter the world of competition barbecue, but Fatzinger was quick to join his long-time friend.  He’s also quick to point out that the competitions are about more than just winning:  “The BBQ circuit is about friends, family, and having a good time.  Win or lose, you always have a good time.”  That may be true, but don’t think for a minute that Fatzinger and Stein aren’t competitive.  “I’m going for the W, baby,” laughs Fatzinger.  “We have been practicing.  We are ready to win.  Sweet and spicy is our theme for this year.”

Two years ago Fatzinger and Stein’s competition team blossomed into a catering company with the same name—Smokin’ Our Butts Off BBQ.  Something they do outside of their regular full-time jobs.  “Last year we didn’t have a single weekend off,” Fatzinger states.  “We are just cooking food we like.  This is our passion.”

Fatzinger believes that the barbecue circuit offers an experience like no other.  “I would tell everyone in the public to make sure you go to a barbecue competition at least once.  It’s something to knock off your bucket list.”  So take his advice and join the fun.  The Barbecue Challenge features 45 pitmaster teams and 20 restaurant teams cooking off for bragging rights and for a trip to the 2014 World Series.  Visitors can sample great food, cool off with refreshing ice cream, kick back at the Bud Bar, see the pitmasters in action, enjoy games, watch the Give and Take Jugglers, take a chance to win a Chase Utley autographed ball or a Jimmy Rollins autographed bat, and more.

This event takes place along Citizens Bank Way outside the Phillies ballpark, and all proceeds benefit Compete 360, an organization founded by former Phillies centerfielder Garry Maddox to support the education and development of urban youth.  For more information visit or call 267-886-8233, and for tickets to that evening’s Phillies game, visit
